PooF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (IT’S BACK) It is I the Genie form Miami,

I am happy to report that I got my PooF! back with smoke effect. It seems that my idiot assistants thought it would be funny to sell my entrance effect on Ebay. Thank goodness no one bid over a dollar for the entrance with smoke effect. I had to get it back. So I bid two and got it back. Can you imagine how upset I am to have to pay to get that back. And I’d hate to think if another belly dancer had won the bid and had MY PooF! as part of her entrance. Imagine if Rachel Brice, ZOE, Romka or Kasar any other dancer had my PooF! and used it on stage, how awsome that entrance would be and I would be so heated. As for my idiot assistants I took a page from my pirate manual and the floggings have begun and will continue to be implemented until moral and efficiency improve.

I had a blast at Spirit of the Tribes 08
I will be posting photos soon. I had a performance the week after Spirit and then will be having an operation the week after so I have been busy.

PooF!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I got it back) The Genie from Miami,

I wanted to thank all the Drummers on Saturday night for indulging me on a whim. I really wanted to see Karim perform the Egyptian Stick dance Tahteeb. I was equally surprised when he called me out I perform with him. I had wanted to move the space over my the side walk to prevent injury, but he insisted on staying put and put on one hell of a performance. I also wanted to know if any one has video of Karim performing? If so, do not put it on you tube until you ask him out of respect. I would love to see this performance but I don’t want to piss him off so he wont want to come back to Spirit. I have wanted to learn this art form for some time and I was so pleased that night that it was like having my Bday present watching him perform.

Extreme Boobage

Hey this might be a bad place to post this but I wanted to give it a shot anyway. I have a steel bra cup that I'm trying to find a loving home for, it's a C-D and has adjustable leather straps. (Lots of coverage and pretty darn cool looking. ) Anyway I brought it with me to Spirit on the off chance that someone might like to trade for it or buy it off me. (Yay! Give to the Spoony gas fund for the insane trip back home!) I paid $90 for it, never wore it because after I had kids the breast fairy took away all my goodies and left me unable to fill the darn thing. *Bummer* So if you'd like an extremely neat looking hooter holster just look for the chick dressed all in white. Make me an offer... I'm pretty flexible.

This is a store on ebay for Buyer BE WEAR
I was bidding on a lot of 6 skirts in which I was winning with a wonderful price so I thought. After the bidding got to $100, the seller put a BUY NOW price in the site so anyone that was bidding and wanted the lot of 6 for $89.00 could purchase it cheaper but the highest bidder was locked into paying the higher price. I paid ASAP and contacted the seller - ask if he would not make up the difference with sending extra wraps - just told me "TO BAD not he fault the bidding got so high"
So I left them a natural comment - and explain the change in auction after price was over $100. In return they give me a negative comment and misleading information my comments. I contacting him asking why the negative when all I did was be a great buyer by over paying within 10 min of the auction ending and only asking for him to balance the wrong doing on his part. Again "TOO BAD" "YOUR FAULT"
My reply...I will take my business and many other with me. HAVE A NICE DAY!

So with all that said - BUYERS BEWEAR....please please please....from one Tribal Goddess to another..PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SALER. There are many other seller on ebay - this guy does not deserve the belly dancer dollars!

I just needed to post this and let everyone know that I am blessed to be surrounded by a toupe full of giving people in Alchemy. I got a call on Friday night after the show about the father of my children had killed himself. I broke down and was picked up by my troupe and they made the decision to leave that night to get me home. We left at 1am and drove for 10 hours. They were all scheduled for classes the rest of the weekend and had a ticket for Saturdays show, but did not see it as an inconvience. My heart was broken , but at the same time full of love for the girls that I dance with. They gave up so much to give me what I needed. Thank you so much the the girls in Alchemy Mari, Jeannie, Brandi and Kristin and to Vany and Papi for being there for me. I love you guys and just want everyone to know what a special and giving group of girls that I dance with. We are taking it one day at a time, but just knowing you guys are there comforts me.

Getting Ready for 2009!

First of all, thanks Maja for hosting Tribes year after year. I am already looking forward to next year! The hotel's location makes it a wonderful and wise choice. And the after party was awesome, although I wish that there would have been more room. But, whatever! It was a lot of fun. Exchanging costume ideas, dance techniques, and other things with so many different dancers was amazing. The drumming at the Hafla was inspiring. I hope that Nagi can come to Jacksonville, Florida! Anyway, I had lots of fun and felt very at home with everybody that was there. The improptu after-party at the hotel's pool was a blast. I hope that everyone made it home safe and.....see ya next year!

Help A Girl Out....

If any of you know of any way to get my little hands on a leather utility belt much like (if not the exact same ones) the ones that KC and Elana were vending? I lusted after those handy works of art all weekend but when I was finally going to cave into my desire they were gone. I've been Googling (don't you hate it when people turn that into a verb?) for the last hour with nothing to show for it. What I have seen online has been pretty lame and can never compare to the functional beauty of KC and Elana's wares.

If any of you can direct me to a source, I would be eternally grateful because I've decided I simply must have one of these to rock on a regular basis.

Made it home safe and sound

Alchemy had to leave early Friday night/Sat. morning at 1am due to a family emergency.
Despite some car trouble en route, we've made it back home safe and sound.
Everyone have fun at the classes and after party. We had a wonderful time at the show and classes and meeting all sorts of wonderful people. We can't wait to do it again next year. :)

So I figured that a strand should be started introducing ourselves, the classes were taking and if you are performing so that we can all get to know one another. This is such a fun event. I have been going to spirit as a spectator for seven years when it was held in a high school Auditorium to now at a large theater. Then about 4 years ago I decided I’d try to see if I like to dance with the intent to try to impress my wife and took one of my first workshops here. We now provide a service to video tape local performers. You can go to cintronart.com to see what we do and see samples of our DVD’s and art. My wife Adeela has been dancing for more than 8 years. If you see us don’t be afraid to say HI! to either of us.

Greetings ALL!!!!!!!!!! Many of you who have been to Spirit before may know me, and for those who are coming for the first time. Greetings! I am “Genie”, I’ll be the hairy ugly chick in the back of the class. Many of the out-of-towners will be staying at the hotel in Down town. I suggest that because there is no real after party arrangement for Friday night that we meet at the pool of the hotel after the show and hang out and get to meet one another. Now as a pirate, I have rum. But we many need to find more resources if need be. I know that we are within stumbling distance of bars and clubs if we chose to forage or pillage. I look forward to meeting you all and having fun dancing.

getting to the hotel (Hampton Inn) from the airport - shuttle? Cab?

Does anyone know if the (official) hotel has a shuttle from the airport? I've been trying to call the hotel but there is no answer. Also if anyone has a clue about what cab fare might run me (looks like it's about 6 miles/15 minutes, but I am clueless about taking cabs! I'm not even sure what to tip!)

Sharks?!

I was hoping to take an afternoon and hit the beach for some snorkeling.....but upon doing a web search, it seems that March - May is when sharks are at their peak in the area. YIKES.
Any locals want to give me their perspective on whether snorkeling is a safe idea? Maybe I should stick to Pina Coladas on the beach!

New to Spirit - questions about area

I am SO excited to be coming to Spirit for the first time....and this is also my 1st time coming to South Florida.

I'd like to know if the venue (War Memorial) and the Hampton Inn are within walking distance of each other?
Also whether things like the beach, Galleria, other shopping, Riverwalk, etc. are all within walking distance or will I need to rent a car to get around?
Also, is Miami a reasonable day trip- are there any shuttles that go between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami?

new to SOT also!

this'll be my first year attending and it'll be MY BIRTHDAY :) the boy is treating me to an amazing weekend with you all! (he's partaking in the workshops too, so it's not as if he's missing out!)

we're hoping to do some exploring in the area while we're there. we're driving down all the way from michigan, so we're making a vacation of it too. where are the best beaches? we're not really sunbathers, we'd have more fun looking for places to walk and search for interesting flora/fauna.

we also love tea rooms and coffee shops. preferably independent establishments. any recommendations?

Hey ya'll....

Just wanted to let you know that Romka just taught our "Steel Style" workshop at Gothla in LA this weekend -- and nobody died! or got beheaded, or even cut themselves!!! (We brought tourniquets and band-aids just in case)

We'll be teaching a similar (but different) version of this workshop at Spirit this year...so don't miss it! ; )

(PS -- no bellydancers were harmed in the making of this workshop. Well, except for Belladonna & Mavi, but we liked it....erm, um, what i meant to say was..ummm..well, at least the end product was pretty!)

(PSS -- Romka in now way supports the cutting or otherwise hurting of bellydancers, In all seriousness our sword workshops are designed to make you look like a bad - a$$ bellydancer WITHOUT hurting yourselves...)

Question about Sword Workshop

Hello! Four of my troupe are taking the Tribal Sword workshop, but since we're flying in for Spirit, I'm afraid the airlines wouldn't be too keen on us flying with swords. I believe the description of the workshop said you didn't need to bring swords, but am wondering if we should bring canes or something like that to approximate swords? What's other folks taking the class doing?

Registration question

I completed my registration online a few weeks ago, and I did read the important stuff in bold font before doing so. But I did something dumb anyway: while picking my classes and paying, I forgot to add the show ticket for Friday night. The website said NOT to complete a separate registration for a show ticket, or it wouldn't be accepted. Is there a way to add the show to my current registration? If not, can I purchase a show ticket when I check in and pick up my badges/passes,etc., or do I have to wait until I'm literally at the door Friday night?

Hey kids help a girl out...this is my first time attending this event so I'm not totally sure how it works...Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm registered for my classes already, so when I arrive do I just go in with my receipt to pick up a pass or so? Can I be there at the time the class begins or do I have to be there by a certain time? I read through the info on the website but I just wasn't sure...thanks for any tips/advice/answers! So far I'm registered for Zoe and Sera's classes...thinking about Ariellah's...who else is attending those??

To all who are attending Spirit 7,

I look forward to seeing you all at this event. For those of you who are coming for the first time you will enjoy yourselves. For those who attend this event ritually it’ll be great to see familiar faces. And finally for those who could not make it this year, well send out some dance energy and pour out the first sip of beer for you all.
This Spirit is special for me. I have attended this event all seven years. I remember when it was held in a High school theater. And then every year it gets bigger and better. Then at Spirit 4, I was no longer just a spectator, I was a student. I took some of my first workshops at Spirit that year. After that year I continued to attend the work shops and watch the amazing shows the last two years. But this year is different for me, this year I will not just be a student, I’ll also be a performer. I am privileged enough to dance with the Lotus dance troop.
I am very excited about performing and anxious as well. As we have been rehearsing I have had to work through several impedances. I have a bad back and had pulled it a few weeks ago. Thankfully two of the girls in the troop are massage therapists and applied their healing arts and in less that a week I was free of pain.
Then there is the fact that I’m a man, and there is no hiding that fact. I’m in a troop consisting mostly women, their was one other male, but he had to drop out. I move differently than women do. Many of the moves I can perform while others just look silly on me and so the choreography has been adapted to include a masculine aspect to it. I’m touched because my needs were taken into consideration. I thank my teacher in tribal for this, I can’t give her credit for political reason on this tribe but when she performs every one knows she’s my instructor, for I shout it from that back of the auditorium and send out my elation.
The last challenge for me was on of the mind. Last year my mother-in –law was in the hospital. She had suffered a stroke and other compilations from diabetes. She has recently suffered a second stroke and is now at home. I had to take a temporary leave of absence from work so that I could stay home and take care of her. The financial and emotional stress weigh heave on my wife and I. I find it hard having to go off to rehearse and look with in my self to find the energy to focus on the troop. While in class all thoughts get pushed back and repressed so that I focus. While in class it can be tense, we want to perform flawlessly, but we always have to remember, we are dancing because we find it fun. Im still amazed at how much fun I have dancing. Five years ago if you would tell me I’d be doing this I would say that you had the wrong guy. So for an hour and half I have a pleasant distraction. But when class is over and I get back in my car and take the hour plus drive home, like a creeping black fog the thoughts and stress roll back in by the time I get home.

This year Spirit will be a very special to me and I hope to meet every one, have fun and chill like a Mo FO !!!!!!!!!!

It was an awesome event - I had a wonderful time and learned sooo much.

I am disappointed that there is to be no vid of the shows - but I understand the legal restrictions of not having signed releases from certain performers. My question is - "Why not REQUIRE that as part of performaning at Spirit (or any such event) that it is understood that a video of the performance will be available for sale to the gen public?"
Ergo - if you don't want such vid put out - then don't perform?

I would just like to say that spirit was such a blast, and give a huge big thank you to lisa wylie who is like a super hero. She was an awesome stage manager! i can imagine that it is an extremely difficult job when there is no rehearsal, everyone is from out of town, and you are working w/ a theater that you aren't that familiar with except for this once a year gig. but you wouldn't know it by the way lisa runs everything smoothly and with such respect and a fun attitude. NOT AN EASY JOB!!!

and as if that isn't enough she also vends, dances in the show, and takes workshops!!! WOW.

speaking of vending, she makes the coolest jewelry (earrings are my fav, my troupe mate alicia has several).

Thanks for making the shows a fun, smooth experience!!!

From the bottom of my heart, I wish to thank you and all of your crew for everything. Even though we were new to Spirit, it all ran very smoothly and we couldn't have asked for more. The crowd was exuberant and supportive on Friday night and we received so many wonderful comments about our performance. We are all still floating on air from our big night. I can describe the atmosphere behind stage in just one word.....magical. To be sharing space with so many lovely dancers, from the famous to the lesser known, was an other worldly experience. I am sure that nothing quite like it will happen to me again in my lifetime.

And there it is......thank you for an experience of a lifetime.

I thought some of the workshops I took were well focused and extremely informitive. However, I HATE learning choreo in a workshop. 1. I will never remember it to really even use combos from, better would be to focus on just a few combos. 2. I will not perform someone else's work.
3. Usually choreo is too long and moves to fast for the time alloted anyway.

I really would like to know for next time if a choreo is being taught, or concepts, combos, technique, or a specific type of folkloric dance. I would skip the choreo altogether.

For instance, would have gotten so much more out of the flamenco workshop if she had taught us a few signature flamenco moves like foot work or arms, instead two choreo that moved so fast I didnt' even have the body posture of it yet.

How do you guys feel about choreo in workshops? And would you like to know ahead of time if it will be choreo or something else?

end of show comments

i just want to say that spirit 7 was AMAZING. i had such a great time and I want to thank everyone for such great energy.

I have a suggestion about the curtain call.... hopefully i'm not being rude, but I remember Maja saying she wanted comments so...

Like some have said it is difficult to follow the 'famous' acts. For the performers and the audience. Especially when the shows are long. so, my thought is to have something similar to friday night.

the main act finishes - backdrop & wings go up to reveal the live band from earlier in the show (racquy & cavemen) -
they begin to play and the dancers begin to come out immediately for the curtain call/improv.

that way there is no confusion about the finale and no one walks out on the act that is after the main act.

I am not at all criticizing the show line up. I am sure i would have done the same thing. but after seeing what happened on sat. eve I began to think about why / what happened. i know that in my musical theater experience the curtain call always starts with the bows, THEN if there is a reprise of a song it comes after the bows have been taken.

Great shows, Maja! great workshops! i wish every weekend was spirit of the tribes!!!!!!!

As always Fire By Riz premires all of our new props at SOT ..Sadly this year we dont have many new props Our off season was spent in the studio producing Fire belly dance 101.
There is a blurb below about it. \

This ground beaking Dvd will not be offered on our web site until after we return from SOT..
Maja and everyone at SOT have treated us so much like family over the years we only feel it right to offer it at this event 1st before its internet release. Fire Belly Dance 101

This ground-breaking video, the first of its kind, is a fantastic introduction to fire belly dance, and gives you everything you need to know to begin dancing with fire! Designed both for the belly dancer who wants to add fire to her repertoire, and for the fire dancer who wants to add belly dance into her act. The video covers three sections; Fire Safety, Instruction, and a knock-out Performance at the end featuring a Fire Belly Dance Duet!

Fire Safety
The most important and crucial aspect of dancing with fire is fire safety. Riz'takes you through the ins and outs of each fire belly dance prop, so that you feel comfortable working with the parameters required by each. After watching this section, take every piece of safety to heart and then be confident that you can work with your fire props and fire in a safe manner.

Instruction
This section introduces you to four fire props; Palms, Belt, Scimitar, and Fans. With each prop, Johanna 'Xenobia' gives an introduction with fire safety and performance tips, then takes you through a short basic combination that layers fire dance with basic belly dance moves. Live drumming by Loud Zoo is her rhythmic backdrop and meter for each combination. At the end of each combination, you'll see how actually lighting the prop on fire adds a whole new powerful dimension to the combination!

Performance
Now we take you away from the classroom setting, into the magical world of the fire performer... Karen SunRay joins Johanna 'Xenobia' in a fiery sunset duet set at the beautiful waterfront at Sacred Lands. Improvisation blends with choreography as the two professional fire belly dancers incorporate some of the basic moves taught in the video with more advanced techniques - inspired by the ambiance and their creative interaction!
