PooF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is I the Genie from Miami,
So I figured that a strand should be started introducing ourselves, the classes were taking and if you are performing so that we can all get to know one another. This is such a fun event. I have been going to spirit as a spectator for seven years when it was held in a high school Auditorium to now at a large theater. Then about 4 years ago I decided I’d try to see if I like to dance with the intent to try to impress my wife and took one of my first workshops here. We now provide a service to video tape local performers. You can go to cintronart.com to see what we do and see samples of our DVD’s and art. My wife Adeela has been dancing for more than 8 years. If you see us don’t be afraid to say HI! to either of us.
I’ll be in Thursday’s
Romka and Lila Haddad
Friday
Ariellah, Reetu Jain, Sera
Saturday
Zoe, Victor Olivio
Sun
Karim Nagi Mr Turbo Tabla
Not performing at Spirit this year but can be seen groving out with the first available drummers.
Be seeing you all,
Lots of Love

Re: Introduce yourself !, Right on.
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 8:06 AMHello all! I'm Tammy from Orlando. I've been dancing for about 3 1/2 years (9 months of that I was pregnant). I started learning cabaret and then about 2 years ago switched to tribal. I am part of a group called Blue Caravan (performing primarily ATS) but we will not be performing at Spirit. This is my second year at Spirit, and like last year, I drag my husband and daughter along with me. Last year after seeing Raquy and the cavemen perform, my husband ran out and bought a drum. This year he will be taking Karim's workshop. So it's exciting to see him getting involved. We are staying at the Hampton, so we may just stop by and check out the Friday night pool party :-)
I will be going to both shows with my daughter (she behaves at shows, so she will not be the screaming child... don't worry)
Classes

Romka
Fri
Ariellah
Zoe
Sera
Sat
Bella Fuegas (hubby will be with Karim)

Sun, April 20, 2008 - 8:07 AMHere's mine for the weekend:
THURS -
Romka
FRI
Ariellah –
Sera
SAT
Moria
Urban Tribal
SUN
None (so far)
And I'll also be volunteering at the Geisha Moth booth off and on both Fri and Sat.
This is only my second time at SotT, but I so loved it last year, that I'll be coming back for years to come. I'm going to be there with some of my Charleston, SC ladies, but no performing for us this year. We're also staying at the Hampton Inn, so if I don't see you at the War Memorial, you'll probably find me by the pool!

Re: Introduce yourself !, Right on.
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 8:26 AMHey there! I'm enjoying the hell out of intermediate tribal with Lacey of Florida Tribal Dance.
I come from a childhood background of zero dance, scrambling to catch up... I started with Bhrigha's cabaret classes back in the day, slid over to the tribal realm with them, and enjoyed a short but exciting succession of teachers at the basic level prior to hooking up with FTD and making it past the rudiments. I'm of a mind to fling swords and fire when the time is right.
I'm taking the sword and zill classes at Spirit, and relaxing, and enjoying the shows, and hanging poolside and oceanside.
I'll refer you to my lady for drumming enjoyment. ;) -

Re: Introduce yourself !, Right on.
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 5:37 PMHi all;
I'm Matt's encouraging counterpart and drummer. Lots of dance and performance experience in my past including exhibition and competitive clogging, marching band, concert band, jazz band and symphony, have been hanging with dancers and drummers for about 15 years and only recently started teaching the beginning beginners what I know and have developed as a nothing is wrong as long as you try it philosophy of getting you used to that first drum and helping you determine what rhythms appeal to you as you move along your drumming path.
My first Spirit I'm looking forward to taking all the stretching and music classes and hanging with other amazing musicians and dancers. Really looking forward to a time when there is a vocabulary of rhythms for drummers that coincides with the Tribal dancers' family of moves and various drummers can employ this vocabulary with a few agreed upon transitions that will mean any live drummer with basic knowledge would be able to drum for tribal dancers. A synergy if you will where drummers are cued by the lead dancer or dancers.
Read Matt's bio for the teaching repertoire and suffice it to say that I've taken beginning tribal dance 5 times and hoping it sticks this time. Can't wait to perform with a group someday, but setting goals and taking baby steps. Have had to overcome a lot between teachers, community, health and discipline. It is all starting to come together.
See everybody there, looking forward to drumming in the dawn on the beach.

This is a really interesting concept. Have you been working on it? I work with a lot of visual cues and dancer responses when I do trance music, even though I'm looking for different things than what you would find in a tribal dancers vocabulary of movement... the process is exactly the same. Maybe we should chat at Spirit a bit?

Re: Introduce yourself !, Right on.
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 12:40 PMBeen working with Jesse Rogers and Lisa Myers on it with the basis of Drumming for Dancers, Dancing for Drummers class that they taught. From that, with their teaching materials, we've taken it one step further into an introductory course for those that have never drummed before into a drills class of popular rhythms that incorporates counting, reading basic drum rhythms in 4/5/7/8s and covers posture and basic hand technique. This class takes a newbee drummer, someone who bought the drum and thinks it looks cool and wants to play like the others s/he has heard but also has a life that is not professional that pays for the drum, dance and shows.
It is a work in progress, with hopes of building the basic vocabulary of rhythms that then works with the dancers. Also uses dancers once the basic vocabulary is learned to show how the drumming can be cued by the dancers. This requires that the drummers playing have a basic knowledge and can switch back and forth between popular beats.
Loud Zoo dancers call out the rhythms they want to the drummers right before they change the movements, that's another way to do it. Then the dancers will know from memory of the rhythms if it will be fast or slow, but the transitions there are a little rough. They are working on it.
Trying to poll drummers and dancers and work with the visual cues I know it can be done, but just need the right mix. Learning what is a 2/4/8 or 16 group of moves from a dancer's perspective will help and teaching the drummers to count like dancers will help as well.
It's coming along. Thanks for asking, yes we can chat more about it at Spirit. Looking forward to it.

Sun, April 20, 2008 - 11:02 AMHi! My name is Lola, and I'm a show girl, with yellow feathers in my hair and a dress cut down to...
Oh, wait, that's not me!
My name is Jeannie, and I'm co-director of Alchemy. As Mari, the Thelma to my Louise, said, we are performing at Spirit for the second time this year, so look for us on Friday night. Along with the three other awesome chicks that make up alchemy, I think our troupe will have a person in just about every single class this year! We'll be arriving at The Hampton on Thursday afternoon, so look for us at breakfast, in the workout room, and poolside, as well as at GM's booth and in the classes. Speaking of classes, here's where I'll be:
Friday:
Ariellah
Zoe
Reetu Jain
Saturday:
Urban Tribal
Sunday:
Arishlam
E Chan and Milla
I'm excited to be going back to Spirit. I missed last year due to just having my second son, with whom I was pregnant at my first Spirit! It will be good to see Spirit without the fog of early pregnancy.
BB and see you all SOOOON!!!

Re: Introduce yourself !, Right on.
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 6:50 PMFt. Lauderdale beach is a very wide beach down to the waters edge south of Sunrise towards Los Olas. We used to have a huge ongoing full moon drum circle there, but it got too rowdy pulling in drunk teenagers and drugs, etc so the police squashed it. But a single drummer or two down close to the waters edge is not going to bother anybody. It was the crowd (300 people) half drunk and rowdy that freaked the police, not the drumming per se. -

A drum circle on the beach....
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 8:56 PM...would be SWEEET!!=oD

Re: Introduce yourself !, Right on.
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 3:51 AMHi Spiritgoers,
I am the Spoon. Easily identifiable in a crowd due to me wearing all white 24/7 and generally a pair of sunglasses too. (Helps with the glare... future's so bright and all. :-P ) I'm a trance dancer/musician and Orientale dancer since 1994. I move pretty well... too well for a comedian. I definately have the Napoleon Dynamite thing going. Though I may seem cheeky it's only to conceal a disturbing intellect and a lack of regard for the conventions of conversational comfort. (I'll happily talk for hours about politics, religion, history and anything else that I find interesting.) This is my first time at Spirit of the Tribes and I've promised to be on my best behaviour, shenanigans to the minimum. I won't be performing in the shows but I'm sure I'll find some way to get my dance fix this weekend. The Shovelglove and I will be shacking up at the Hampton Inn.
I don't remember what workshops I'm doing but I'm sure I'll se you happy people around the event at some point.

Mon, April 21, 2008 - 6:20 PMHiya everyone!
Misha here from sunny Sarasota - across the state and upwards from 'Lauderdale. This will be the 4th time I've been at Spirit and I'm really looking forward to it! My background is in Raks Sharki, American Oriental, and because I apparently have a split personality (or am a masochist?), ATS, ITS and tribal fusion. I have the honor of teaching and performing all those styles, plus a bit of folkloric and Turkish when the mood takes me. heh.
I'm takin'
Fri: Ariellah, Zoe, Sera
Sat: Hoops, Zoe, Moria, Urban Tribal
(maybe a few on Thurs if we can make it in time!)
you'll probably find me out curled up under a tree when not dancing (i'm a nature girl) with my hubby, who's coming for drumming goodness. (i'm kinda shy so sometimes you have to poke at me...)
I'm also helping out the lovely ms. Geisha Moth in the booth and with lugging stuffs around - we will be bringing loads of pantsy goodness down with me to you lovely folks. (I opened the box yesterday - she is bringing some GOOD stuffs to us!!!)
